Winter In-Home Documentary Session

This in-home winter session with the Muehl family was so simple and meaningful, and definitely leaned into the documentary approach of photography. Before the session, we planned out a few ideas to photograph during our time together, paying special attention to the rhythms that they have with one another day in and day out: playing with Magnatiles, singing hymns as a family, and working toward their goal of spending 1000 hours outdoors each year.

Sometimes I think as photographers we can get so caught up in “making art” (with good intentions), that we don’t allow a family to just be, and for the photographs to reveal meaning simply because the rhythms of the family have meaning. This was a session where I could really take a step back and allow each moment to unfold organically – honing in on personality and connection as they truly are.
